Why do scars turn black?

Scars are an inevitable part of life.

Whether it’s from an injury, surgery, or a skin condition, scars can be a reminder of a difficult time in our lives. While some scars fade away over time, others can remain visible for years. Unfortunately, some scars can even turn black, a condition known as hyperpigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation is a dark brown discoloration that occurs when the skin produces too much of the pigment melanin. This can happen when the skin is exposed to too much sun, which can cause the melanin to accumulate in the scar. This can make the scar more visible and even darker than the surrounding skin.

The good news is that hyperpigmentation is not permanent. With the right treatment, it can be reversed. The first step is to protect the scar from the sun. Wearing a broad spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen can help to block out the sun’s harmful rays and prevent the melanin from accumulating in the scar.

In addition to sun protection, there are other treatments that can help to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation. These include topical creams and ointments that contain ingredients such as hydroquinone, kojic acid, and retinoids. These products can help to lighten the dark spots and even out the skin tone.

Laser treatments are also an option for treating hyperpigmentation. Laser treatments can help to break up the excess melanin and reduce the appearance of the dark spots. However, it’s important to note that laser treatments can be expensive and may not be covered by insurance.

No matter what treatment you choose, it’s important to be patient. It can take several weeks or even months for the treatments to take effect. In the meantime, it’s important to continue to protect the scar from the sun and to avoid any activities that could further irritate the skin.

Hyperpigmentation can be a frustrating condition, but with the right treatment, it can be reversed. By protecting the scar from the sun and using the right topical treatments, you can reduce the appearance of the dark spots and even out the skin tone.
